Alex Corina's vision of South Liverpool as a cultural hotspot is moving closer to reality. SLBL supports Alex's campaign. We have had a series of meetings and conversations with Alex to offer our support and suggest ways in which his dream might become reality.
In fact, it is progressing already. Five artists have moved into Alex's 'Art Works' HQ in Garston's Duke Street and there are plans to expand the facility to accommodate another 15. "As prices go ever upward in the city centre working artists will need somewhere to live and work which is affordable," Alex points out. "Here, they get twice the space for the same money they'd pay in the city centre."
Elaine Vicars, one of the artists working at Art Works, says: "I didn't have anywhere with enough space to work until this opportunity came along." John Moores University graduate Carla Campion paints using oils and mixed media. She is looking forward to developing her art in the Garston studio and says: "There are a lot of unsaid things in life. You have to get beyond that, reach out to people and let them put their own interpretation on what you paint."
Alex is keen to encourage art in its widest definition. Rita Slater works with items of household furniture "to explore the relationship between the body and furniture and its connections with architecture."
It's an exciting development which gives the Cultural Village a tangible foundation. Also planned are events, exhibitions, artists in residence, close co-operation with schools and a permanent gallery where the artists can sell their work.
