The Business Centre takes shape
Behind the Dealers Arms in Garston's St Mary's Road can be found the first evidence of a new phase of regeneration. The Speke Garston Business Centre is a privately funded enterprise which aims to supply much-needed office space - but more than that, the scheme by Tony Alexatos is a significant investment in the potential of the area.
Much of Garston Village has been bypassed by the major phases of regeneration in South Liverpool. And with Objective One money slowing to a trickle the input of entrepreneurs like Tony is vital.
"We are the first to do something like this in Garston," says Tony. "We have had a lot of help from the Council, from Speke Garston Partnership and NWDA but the money has all come from our own resources. I believe you must have a vision in life and we have a vision for Garston. This Centre is not just about potential earnings for us - if it works out well, it will give other people the incentive to do other things in the area."
The Centre, created in an old snooker hall and a derelict church, contains 8000 square feet divided into 17 office units, reception and relaxation areas and conference room. Occupants will benefit from reception services, 24 hour security including secure car parking, and the usual office facilities.
"The sort of people who will benefit from this are start-up companies, large companies needing temporary space for special projects or training, and people with a temporary office requirement," says Tony. Around eight permanent jobs are being created.
Tony and his wife and business partner Rita have consulted closely with South Liverpool Business Leaders to help resolve some of the practical difficulties. "We are extremely grateful to Coleman Costello for his advice and support," says Tony, "and also to PC Dave Wiggins from Merseyside Police."
