"If someone sets off from home to go to work in the morning, they are entitled to get back home at night in the same condition." That's the philosophy of Ray Limb - and it's a philosophy he acts on every day.
Ray is sales director of R & R Safety Systems, a company which in six years has helped countless men and women get back home in one piece.
Ray and his partner Bob Owen operate an accessible and affordable method of dealing with health and safety issues. They set up the business in 1999 as a 'club,' to which members would subscribe on the basis of a monthly fee. The arrangement keeps R & R's cashflow steady and guarantees the subscribers two safety audits each year, plus advice and trouble-shooting.
The firm aims to deal with safety issues in a no-nonsense manner. "People get distracted by all the laws, and the sub-sections and everything else, but at the end of the day it's just about making it safe to be at work," says Ray.
"Health and safety is something every company should take seriously. If a firm employs five people or more they have to have a safety policy in written form. That policy says that you are going to look after your staff and the people who visit you. The most important part is your statement as to how you will do that. For example, what happens if there's a fire? Who are your first aiders? Who carries out your risk assessments?
"We work with companies to produce safety manuals which are specific to that company. We want companies to understand properly what it's all about, so that if we are not there they have someone who knows how it's done."
It's all about watching your back and the threats come from all manner of sources. R & R advise clients on everything from food hygiene to the use of breathing apparatus to the safe movement of patients.
