Parklands High School is an Extended School located in Speke, Liverpool, which is the second most deprived ward on the index of deprivation. This pilot project aimed to achieve a step-change in performance at GCSE level for the current Year 10 pupils at Parklands High School. The project would integrate effectively with out-of- school pupil development, thus forming part of the Youth University programme.

The project, based on the establishment of an academic intervention team, aimed to devise a personal diagnostic and intervention plan to combat issues facing pupils at Parklands High School, such as deprivation and the constraints of the class system on achievement.

Overall, the intention was to instil in the young people of Speke a greater level of personal and academic aspiration and achievement. Pupils were exposed to a range of resources and teaching methods in order to promote and encourage self-learning. A strong emphasis was placed on parental intervention. Therefore, sessions were held for parents on how to manage, motivate and support their child during Year 11.
