Liverpool John Lennon Airport is located in Speke, a suburb south of Liverpool. In the last 10 years it has undertaken a major programme of investment and expansion meaning that it is now one of the fastest-growing airports, in terms of passenger numbers and flight destinations, in Europe.

The airport has strong links with the local community and is committed to recruiting from and developing the skills of the local labour market. Speke Garston Education Action Zone (EAZ) has a close strategic working relationship with the airport, particularly with the human resources (HR) department.

This project arose as a result of EAZ schools' endeavours to improve the vocational curriculum opportunities offered to students, particularly those studying travel and tourism. Subsequently, a programme was created that would give sixth formers a valuable insight into the management and day-to-day running of the various airport departments. The programme was piloted in the academic year 2001/02 and has run successfully since then.
