The project began when New Heys Community School, in its capacity as a Business and Enterprise College, looked to forge links with local businesses and primary schools in order to develop the creative curriculum.
Education Action Zone (EAZ) staff met with representatives from the Jaguar Cars and all parties agreed that developing an e-book about the car plant would form the basis of the project.
Banks Road Primary School was selected for involvement in the project as it had identified ICT as a school priority.
EAZ staff worked together using mind-friendly learning techniques to plan two days of activities and staff from Jaguar facilitated the visit and organised the pupils' tour of the factory. A member of New Heys Community School's staff with responsibility for ICT shadowed the visits so that the project could be sustainable in the long term with other primary schools.
- to use local businesses to make learning fun and to stimulate pupils' interest in their immediate environment
- to deliver elements of the primary strategy programme through a holistic and creative project
- to raise pupils' self-esteem through structured interactions in an adult working environment
- To show pupils how a car is assembled through a guided tour of the Jaguar factory
- To develop pupils' literacy and ICT skills through the production of an electronic book based on their observations during the tour
- To enrich pupils' vocabulary and provide an opportunity for them to communicate with adults using interview techniques
- To provide an enriching experience where pupils are given control and ownership of a major part of each activity
- To widen and enhance pupils' knowledge and understanding of businesses in the local environment
