This project was developed to encourage more pupils to choose Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) as an option at GCSE. It aimed to inspire young people to see the relevance and importance of learning a language alongside other GCSE subjects (in particular business studies, and leisure and tourism) to enhance employability.
The project was particularly timely given the anticipated increase in overseas visitors to Liverpool and in light of the city gaining the title of European Capital of Culture 2008. Languages for Life also promoted the government's Enterprise Learning Strategy at Key stage 4 by giving pupils a better understanding of their future role, and responsibility in, the economic community.
- To develop innovative learning materials to support the requirements of the GCSE syllabus
- To ensure that pupils recognise the importance and value of language skills within their local context
- To provide a vehicle for raising achievement
- To provide a forum for collaboration among MFL teachers
- To exploit the use of new technologies for curriculum enrichment
|
- The project was initially piloted with Year 9 pupils prior to them selecting their GCSE options. As the programme developed, pupils from Years 10 and 11 took part in the production of an interactive CD-ROM.
