Siren is a programme that brings together the NHS and schools. In particular, Siren supports those teaching and studying various health and social care modules in Liverpool schools. Furthermore, health and social care professionals are helping to address future recruitment issues by giving students first-hand experiences of the careers available within the NHS.

This close working partnership aims to encourage students to use their greater understanding of the role of the NHS to go on to further education and ultimately to seek employment in this vital sector of our community. The formation of a Siren Academy was the natural extension to this work.

The Academy is now up and running. Since September 2004,12 students have been receiving off-the-job training for two days a week continuing with their academic studies on the remaining three days. From November, they will benefit from on-the-job training for one day a week. A programme that gives students experience of working alongside health professionals in both the acute and primary care sectors has been developed. The programme also contributes to the workforce development strategy of the NHS, raises students' awareness of the vast range of careers available in the NHS and helps to address the shortage of staff that has been predicted for the future.
