Siren is a programme that brings together the NHS and schools. In particular, Siren supports those teaching and studying various health and social care modules in Liverpool schools. Furthermore, health and social care professionals are helping to address future recruitment issues by giving students first-hand experiences of the careers available within the NHS.
This close working partnership aims to encourage students to use their greater understanding of the role of the NHS to go on to further education and ultimately to seek employment in this vital sector of our community. The formation of a Siren Academy was the natural extension to this work.
The Academy is now up and running. Since September 2004,12 students have been receiving off-the-job training for two days a week continuing with their academic studies on the remaining three days. From November, they will benefit from on-the-job training for one day a week. A programme that gives students experience of working alongside health professionals in both the acute and primary care sectors has been developed. The programme also contributes to the workforce development strategy of the NHS, raises students' awareness of the vast range of careers available in the NHS and helps to address the shortage of staff that has been predicted for the future.

- To support students in gaining full accreditation for the Level 2 NVQ in Customer Service
- To provide students with a good knowledge of the opportunities in the NHS
- To encourage and support students in order to increase their confidence and enhance their chances of employment within the NHS
- To deliver a training programme that meets NHS requirements but also provides students with valuable work skills and experience in a relevant, challenging and stimulating learning environment

- Students from Years 12 and 13 hoping to pursue a career in the NHS
|
- The programme has been planned to complement and enhance the subject of health and social care. Students will gain experience of working within a health environment and will see how healthcare is delivered within hospitals and communities, both of which will enhance their curriculum-based learning.
- This programme will bring the traditional way of learning to life through first-hand experiences, thus creating a truly vocational qualification.
