Middlefield is playing an important part in the regeneration of Speke. It's a community school with a wide range of extended activities:

  • Adult learning centre
  • Creche for the very youngest members of the community
  • Quiet Place helping to deal with stress
  • Children's University, providing extra-curricular learning opportunities
  • Work experience programme for child-care students from Parklands
  • Partnership links with the other Speke schools and with local employers

Middlefield parents and staff want the best for our children. We're seeing how standards of achievement and attainment are rising, year on year in our school. And we're determined to keep that momentum going, with

  • great teaching and learning
  • families and school working together
  • a school that's a great place to be in

Middlefield is a large primary school, with 320 pupils. We're in a lovely modern building, situated very close to the Parklands campus.

Children start to come to Middlefield at a very early age. Now that we have our creche (opened last year, in partnership with Sure Start) we can welcome babies and toddlers who can be well looked after while their mums (and some dads!) enjoy the courses at the adult learning centre. The creche has close links with our nursery and reception classes. When the time comes for children to start full-time school, they'll already have had a very good introduction to what it's all about!

We're very proud of our children's achievements in 2004. When the league tables for primary schools were published, our school was one of the most improved in the city, with a huge 60 points increase on last year's aggregate score.

Our unit class for children with behavioural difficulties continues to operate successfully. The unit supports the return into mainstream schooling for children who may have experienced exclusion and other problems.

This year we've extended our after-school activities and our children now enjoy a wide range of after-school clubs. We're continuing to run our very successful breakfast club, which is open from 8 o'clock every morning.

South Liverpool League Finals
The South Liverpool Football League Finals took place at Walton Sport Centre on Thursday 7th April. There were three teams, Middlefield, Stockton Wood and St Charles. The first match was Middlefield vs St Charles, our vice captain Josh Doran scored and the match ended 1:0 to Middlefield.

The next match was Middlefield vs Stockton Wood which ended in a 2:2 draw. We won the final match 1:0 against St Charles and there was a penalty shootout with Middlefield and Stockton Wood (who had the same number of wins) with Middlefield scoring the winning penalty, Well done lads!

Transition work with Parklands
We've continued our transition work with Parklands, to ensure that our 11 year olds can make a confident and secure transfer to secondary school. We're working with our secondary colleagues to design curriculum units that the children start in Year 6 and complete in Year 7. As always, we collaborate closely with them on pastoral issues to ensure continuity of care for al out children around transfer time.

New Assembly at Middlefield School
Middlefield school have introduced a new assembly on a Monday afternoon. This special assembly is to reward the children who come into school everyday and are never late. We have two attendance trophies for first and second place. These children get to choose a prize if they have been in school and on time, every day for the last week.

First Aid
During this last term some of the children have been taking part in a first aid course. They learned about different first aid techniques such as CPR and mouth to mouth ressusation. Mr Rowlandson, who is our school first aider, now teaches first aid every Monday after school untill 4.00.

The school has a nursery offering 45 part time places (2 sessions), with 14 infant and junior classrooms, all with growing ICT and learning resources. Additionally we offer a Quiet Place, Children's University, an active PSP group and a range of after school activities.

The Quiet Place
This project provides support in school for children and families who are experiencing stress and anxiety in their lives. The Quiet Place offers a range of therapies, provided by highly qualified staff. The aim is to build confidence and self-esteem and to provide the children with strategies to cope better when they are under stress.

Quiet Place has now opened in several other school in the city, as a result of its success in Middlefield. It has achieved a national reputation for effective practice, through TV, radio and press coverage and has attracted interest and visitors from schools and universities from all over the country.

Parents Support Centre
The Parents Support is open all week, with courses running every day. Courses typically include leisure (sugarcraft, keepfit etc), ICT courses at beginner and more advanced levels. Parents as Educator courses and Reachout Access. There is no charge for any of the courses and the centre is open to all local residents. New students are always welcomed.
